We’ve all been there. You’re trying to grow your hair, you’re avoiding the scissors at all costs…and then you look closely at the ends and realise they’re looking a little worse for wear.
But what actually causes split ends? Can all those products promising to “repair” them really work? And do you actually need to have them cut off?
Here’s what you need to know.
What actually is a split end?
Each strand of hair has an outer protective layer called the cuticle. Over time, heat, brushing, colouring, UV exposure and general wear and tear can weaken this protective layer.
Eventually, the end of the hair can begin to split into two or more pieces.
You might notice:
- Little Y-shaped splits at the ends
- Tiny white dots on the hair
- Ends that feel rough or dry
- Hair that tangles more easily
- Ends that look wispy or see-through
- Lots of little broken hairs
And unfortunately, once a strand has physically split, it can’t permanently fuse itself back together.
So do split-end products actually work?
Yes…and no.
A good serum, oil, conditioner or treatment can temporarily smooth the hair, reduce friction and make split ends look and feel dramatically better.
Some modern repair treatments can also help strengthen weakened areas within the hair and reduce future breakage.
What they can’t do is permanently stick a completely split strand back together.
Think of treatments as helping to protect and strengthen the hair you have, rather than replacing the need for a haircut forever.
Do I have to cut loads off?
Definitely not.
In fact, one of the biggest mistakes we see is clients avoiding a haircut because they’re growing their hair.
Regularly removing a small amount from the ends can actually help you maintain fuller, healthier-looking lengths.
Leave split ends for too long and the damage can continue further up the strand, meaning you may eventually need to remove more hair than you would have with regular maintenance trims.
Why do I keep getting split ends?
Some splitting is simply part of having longer hair your ends are the oldest part of your hair and have been through years of washing, brushing, styling and environmental exposure.
But certain habits can speed things up:
Too much heat
Straighteners, curling irons and very hot hairdryers can weaken the hair, particularly when used without heat protection.
Rough brushing
Dragging a brush through knots can cause mechanical damage and snapping.
Colour and chemical services
Lightening and colouring can make hair more vulnerable if its condition isn’t properly maintained.
UV exposure
Just like our skin, our hair is affected by the sun. After summer, we often see clients whose ends feel noticeably drier and rougher.
Not having regular trims
Waiting until your ends are badly split usually means more needs removing.
How can I prevent them?
You can’t prevent every split end forever, but you can significantly reduce them.
Use heat protection every time you heat style, condition your hair properly, detangle gently from the ends upwards and use professional treatments when your hair needs additional strengthening or hydration.
And don’t underestimate a regular trim.
The Strand verdict
If you’re growing your hair, don’t be frightened of the scissors.
A good haircut shouldn’t automatically mean losing loads of length. Sometimes removing a surprisingly small amount can make the whole head of hair look thicker, shinier and healthier.
