Does Your Hair Need Moisture, Protein or Both?

Sometimes your hair needs moisture. Sometimes it needs strengthening. And very often, it needs a carefully balanced combination of both.

First: what’s the difference?

Moisture is about softness, flexibility and manageability.

Hair lacking moisture may feel:

  • Dry
  • Rough
  • Frizzy
  • Difficult to detangle
  • Dull
  • Less flexible than usual

Think of moisture as helping hair feel soft, supple and conditioned.

Protein and repair are about strength and structure.

Hair that has become weakened particularly through lightening, colouring, chemical treatments, excessive heat or environmental damage may be more prone to:

  • Snapping
  • Breakage
  • Excessive stretching when wet
  • Feeling unusually weak or fragile
  • Losing its shape
  • Breaking before it gets the chance to grow

This hair may benefit from strengthening and bond-building treatments rather than simply adding more conditioner.

Can hair need both?

Absolutely and that’s extremely common.

Imagine blonde hair that’s been lightened, regularly heat styled and then exposed to two weeks of sun and swimming.

It could be both dehydrated AND structurally weakened.

Adding moisture alone might make it feel softer, but it doesn’t necessarily address its strength.

Likewise, continually using strengthening products without enough conditioning can leave some hair feeling stiff or rough.

Balance is important.

Try the elasticity test

One thing your stylist may look at is the elasticity of your hair.

When healthy hair is wet, it should have some stretch and then return towards its original shape.

If the hair stretches excessively and feels almost gummy before breaking, it can indicate that the structure has been compromised.

If it barely stretches and immediately snaps, there may be other issues with its condition.

It’s not a perfect DIY diagnosis which is why professional assessment is useful  but it demonstrates why simply calling all unhappy hair “dry” isn’t always accurate.

Can you overdo protein?

Yes.

More isn’t always better when it comes to haircare.

Continually using strong protein-based products when your hair doesn’t require them can leave some hair feeling stiff, brittle or difficult to manage.

This is why we’re big believers in treating the hair that’s actually sitting in front of us, rather than automatically recommending the same treatment to everyone.

What about your homecare?

This is where a lot of hair routines go wrong.

Your shampoo, conditioner, mask and leave-in products should complement your hair type, colour services, styling routine and current condition.

The perfect routine for your friend’s bleached blonde hair probably isn’t the perfect routine for your natural brunette hair.

And the products your hair loved six months ago might not necessarily be what it needs today.

Hair changes.

The Strand verdict

Instead of asking:

“What’s the best treatment?”

Ask:

“What’s the best treatment for MY hair?”

There isn’t one miracle product that every head of hair needs.

Your hair might need hydration. It might need strengthening. It might need a detox first. Or it might need a combination.

That’s why consultation is such an important part of what we do.

Next time you’re in The Strand, ask your stylist:

“What does my hair actually need at the moment?”

You might be surprised by the answer and a small change to your salon treatment or home routine could make a huge difference to how your hair looks and feels.
