Is Air Drying Better Than Blow Drying?

For years we’ve been told that air drying is healthier than using a hairdryer.

The truth is… it’s not always that simple.

Why Wet Hair Is So Vulnerable

Hair is at its weakest when it’s wet.

Water causes the hair shaft to swell, lifting the cuticle slightly and making the strands more fragile.

The longer hair stays soaking wet, the longer it remains in this vulnerable state.

Is Blow Drying Bad?

Not necessarily.

Using a hairdryer incorrectly can certainly damage your hair, especially if you’re using maximum heat without heat protection.

However, using a quality dryer with moderate heat and keeping it moving is often kinder than leaving your hair wet for several hours.

The Best Way to Dry Your Hair

Instead of rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel:

  • Gently squeeze out excess water.
  • Use a microfibre towel.
  • Apply heat protection.
  • Allow hair to air dry until it’s around 70–80% dry.
  • Finish with a gentle blow dry using medium heat and a nozzle attachment.

This gives you the best of both worlds.

Why Summer Makes This Even More Important

Many people leave their hair wet after swimming or showering during summer.

Combined with sunshine, humidity and chlorine, wet hair can become tangled, frizzy and more prone to damage.

Drying your hair properly helps keep it smoother and healthier.

The Verdict

Air drying isn’t automatically healthier.

The healthiest routine is one that protects your hair while it’s most vulnerable.

With the right products and good technique, a gentle blow dry is often the better choice.
